The Motel Room (NSFW)

One of the things I miss in my studio is natural window light. My photo studio is on the ground floor and while it has huge beautiful old-fashioned windows, they face north and the light from them is not so good for photos (and the view is quite terrible). For some time this held me back from using them in my photos.

Then I decided to see if I could somehow simulate natural light with hotshoe flashes. Using 2 nikon SB 910s and a white piece of cloth, I constructed a big softbox in the gap between the outer and the inner windows (roughly a 10cm gap).

While I was playing around, I fell in love with the light it was producing and I was able to control how it looked, how wide the window appeared, whether the light was coming from above, below, or from the middle.

One of the light setups felt like a seedy motel room with small windows and the street light streaming in from outside and it inspired this series..
